2024 Scouting for Food
Lincoln Heritage Council Seneca District
Be Prepared to report Scouting for Food collection results by end of day, November 18:
Lincoln Heritage Council Seneca District
The purpose of Scouting for Food is to allow all Scouts and Scouters the opportunity to do a Council-wide Good Turn for the community. Scouting for Food gives each Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, and Explorer/Venturer a sense of community and citizenship.
Every year Scouts from all over the country participate in this project to feed the hungry. Hunger is an unacceptable issue that the Boy Scouts of America has taken on as a challenge to fight. We as leaders must do all we can to pass onto our Scouts an attitude of service in fighting this dreaded problem. In our service area, 1 in 7 people struggle with hunger.
This year's event includes flyer distribution the weekend of Novemer 9-10, and food collection on Saturday, November 16.
During the weekend of November 9-10, you and your fellow Scouts in your unit will distribute the Scouting for Food flyers, letting your community know that you will be back the following Saturday, November 16, to collect bags of food that they are willing to donate.
It’s simple. Each unit (pack, troop, post, crew) will register their unit to participate and distribute a Scouting for Food sticky note (sponsored by the Independent Pilot Association) to each residence in their assigned geographic area.
One week later, collect donated bags of food and bring your collected donations to your local collection site, your chartered organization's food pantry, or any Dare to Care food bank.
Finally, report your unit's results using the Unit Collection Report form by end of day, November 18.
✔ Each unit to participate
✔ Each unit to provide a unit chair for contact and planning
✔ Ask as many youth to participate as possible
✔ To break last year’s total pounds of food raised
✔ To foster a sense of caring and service in our youth
✔ To feed the hungry
Secure commitment of unit leadership and make official unit commitment to participate in Scouting for Food at the October Roundtable meeting on October 9, or as soon as possible. Using the QR code in the Leader's Guide, sign up your unit to participate and confirm the number of flyers you need.
Attend Seneca District Roundtable on October 9th, 7pm - 8pm, at Sam Swope Scout Center (12001 Sycamore Station Pl, Louisville, KY 40299). At Roundtable you will pickup your sticky note flyers and select your unit's territory to cover as part of the "Land Grab". Seneca District Scouting For Food Chair Bill Hauber will present the Scout Safety Moment for how Scouts can complete flyer distribution and donated food collection safely in November.
Recruit adult help with vehicles for collection day on November 16 to assist Scouts in your unit as they collect food door-to-door.
Coordinate distribution of flyers by Scouts in your unit the weekend of November 9-10 to households in your unit territory to cover as determined in the "Landgrab".
Arrange and complete collection of filled bags in same assigned territory one week later on November 16 and deliver filled bags to collection center.
Send photos and a press release to local district media contacts.
Submit your participation report to District Scouting for Food Chair by end of day on November 18 using the Unit Collection Report form.
Your first step is to review the use the Leader's Guide and register using the unit registration form confirming who your Scouting For Food unit coordinator will be, and providing an estimate of how many flyers your unit will need.
After your unit has been registered, a representative from your unit will need to attend the October 9th Seneca District Roundtable meeting, 7pm - 8pm, at the Sam Swope Scout Center (12001 Sycamore Station Pl, Louisville, KY 40299). At Roundtable, you will receive collection details, your unit's sticky note flyers, and will confirm your unit's territory to cover as part of the "Land Grab".
Each unit will be asked to cover a designated area the weekend of November 9-10 and complete food collection on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Units will want to cover an area in or near their neighborhoods. To avoid duplication and ensure maximum coverage, a “Land Grab” will be completed at the October 9 Seneca District Roundtable meeting, 7pm - 8pm, at Sam Swope Scout Center. Scouting For Food Flyers will also be available for pickup during the Roundtable meeting, and the October Safety Moment will cover how to ensure scouts can participate safely in Scouting For Food when going door-to-door to distribute flyers and collect donated food.
For the Land Grab, a large map of the district will be on display. The map will be divided into neighborhoods or quadrants. A representative of each unit will be able to pick the neighborhood or quadrant the unit would like. After all units have had a chance to pick an area, the district Scouting for Food Chair and committee will review and give final approval. There may be a few adjustments made. Units should record territory in detail to ensure all neighborhoods are covered.
